Disability charity hopes to tap into NY resolutions to fund new HQ

Jersey Mencap aims to build a world where people with a learning disability are “valued equally, listened to and included”.

To achieve this, the charity supports children and adults with a learning disability, and campaigns for improved services, choices and opportunities by offering support in a variety of ways.

This includes the ‘Taking Art Making Art Project’, which sees professional artists running weekly sessions and supporting people to be creative in a variety of art mediums, a book club and the Pond Project that enables individuals to gain skills in conservation, safe use of tools and general work experience, among others.

As it looks to creating ever more opportunities, Mencap is hoping to tap into islanders’ active endeavours in the New Year…

“If your New Year resolution includes focussing on your fitness, then you might consider signing up for the South Coast Charity Challenge. This 15-mile coastal walk on Sunday 16 May 2022 is open for registration online and all money raised will help people with a learning disability in Jersey.

“As a charity, we are looking forward to the year ahead and ensuring our projects thrive and grow to meet demand. We welcome 40 to 70 adults with a learning disability every week at our activities.

Lorraine Mclean, Mortgage Sales Manager at Skipton International said: “We are always looking for worthwhile projects to lend our support to through the Community Fund and can’t think of a better cause than helping Jersey Mencap throw the best parties for their members. The charity does a fantastic job in providing opportunities to those adults in Jersey with a learning disability so that they can enjoy fun, friendship and help reduce isolation.”.

Jersey Mencap currently have 120 members and host around 54 different social events and experiences throughout the calendar year, with the social club costing approximately £6,000 to fund. The Skipton Community Fund was established in 2018 and aims to help smaller not-for-profit organisations with projects, events or exhibitions, proving that a little can really go a long way.

“Our objective is to offer more opportunities and choice through our projects which include vibrant art sessions, buzzing social club and a new fitness programme which includes health walks, fitness circuits, Zumba and petanque – we aim to have something for everyone.

“Our goal is to secure an accessible hub to host our activities so we can develop all our projects and keep it appealing by regularly offering something new so our members can achieve the things they want from life.

“We would like to thank all our supporters, members, carers, volunteers and staff for their ongoing support and wish Islanders a Happy New Year from everyone at Jersey Mencap.”.
