A WEEK-LONG programme of events is taking place in Jersey to celebrate Learning Disability Awareness Week, which begins today, under the theme ‘Can you see me?’.
Health and Care Jersey’s Adult Learning Disability Service is partnering with local organisations including Jersey Mencap and Haute Vallée School to raise awareness of the support available for Islanders living with a learning disability.
Currently, around 280 Islanders are supported by the service, with levels of care tailored to individual needs. The aim is to empower people with learning disabilities to live fulfilling and independent lives through personalised education plans, assistive technology and access to supportive environments.
Throughout the week, a series of events will take place to inform, engage and connect Islanders.
Today (Monday), members of the public are invited to a drop-in session at the Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre to learn more about the services available.
On Wednesday (18 June), adults with a learning disability will join Haute Vallée pupils in a joint art class, designed to promote inclusion through creativity.
On Thursday, the Learning Disability Service will host a workshop for parents at the Radisson Blu Hotel, in partnership with Jersey Mencap. The session will focus on a new Sexuality and Relationships Policy, with guidance on how best to support adults with learning disabilities in navigating personal relationships.
The week will end with a community picnic in Howard Davis Park on Friday from noon, featuring music and a Zumba session led by Jersey Mencap.
Meanwhile, adapted exercise sessions run by the Learning Disability Physiotherapist Team in partnership with AquaSplash continue to offer tailored physical activity for individuals with learning disabilities. These small group sessions aim to improve mobility, boost confidence and support social inclusion through aquatic therapy.
Islanders are encouraged to get involved throughout the week to learn more, show support and celebrate inclusion.
