Changing Places

"Changing Places"

Following successful campaigning in 2009 by Jersey Mencap and the Jersey Employment Trust service user group “Speak Out”,  Changing Places toilets will now become a facility available in St Helier.  The first will be in the new Town Park and will shortly be completed.  There are also plans in hand for the Town Hall in Seale Street to have a Changing Places Toilet.  A proposal to changing of the Building Bye-laws was taken to the states  which calls for a Changing Places facility to be “provided in any newly constructed or extended public building, which at completion of the work has a ground floor area of 700sq.m or more and all newly constructed public toilet buildings”.

Changing Places toilets are for profound and multiple learning disabled people, as well as others with serious impairments.  They are different to standard disabled toilets with extra features and more space to meet the needs.  They have height adjustable adult sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system, enough space for the disabled person and up to two carers, centrally placed toilet, wide tear off paper rolls to cover the bench, large waste bin for disposable pads and a non-slip floor.

These toilets make a life changing difference to people with profound disabilities and their families/carers.  It is the difference between - either being forced to change disabled people on dirty toilet floors, limit the time of outings or not bother going out at all.   People with disabilities and their families are denied the right to do things that other members of the community take for granted, fortunately this will soon be a thing of the past in Jersey.     We are extremely grateful to Deputy Andrew Green who championed this cause for us and to Constable Simon Crowcroft and TTS for their support and work in making this happen.
